HOLDING ON
After the passing of her mother, Ayumi struggles between her expectations at work and university, her relationships with her friend and father, and processing her own grief in this 6 minute experimental music video.
MY ROLE
My primary role within this project was the editor.
I did assist on set as an art assistant to our Production Designer, Layla Burtt, but mainly I was usually behind Tom Lonsdale our Director of Photography, Cinematographer and Camera Operator, looking over shots and gaining an idea of both his personal style and ideas of what the final product would look like.
After production, I spent the seven weeks between filming and submission working on the Assembly, Rough and Fine Cuts with our director Bailey Pulepule (pictured next to me). In collaboration with the Creative Sound Designer, Dylan Ford, to produce the soundtrack and combine the two elements. Additionally, with help from Tom for the VFX, I graded the film in Davinci Resolve over the last week.
INFLUENCES
I think the best way to describe editing and colouring style is probably ‘Indie-Wanna-Be’.
I do use the term with affection as the independent style and genre is a major inspiration for what I like to use in my own work.
While Holding On’s cinematography is more classic as per Tom’s personal style, I enjoy playing around with colour, light and dark to the point where the film doesn’t look like it takes place in the real world, which aligned with Bailey’s ideas of using colour as a key storytelling element, and having key colours within each scene.
